Our 21 mm Engineered Oak is constructed as a multilayer board, consisting of a Solid Oak face or wear layer of 6mm, with a 15mm quality plywood backing that forms the T&G, and provides a good strong underside suitable for installation by nailing, gluing or floating. The underside is also ‘sealed’ with a final stabilising veneer.
Our Engineered Boards do not have a softwood core and because of this are strong enough to be fitted using any of the 3 common methods; Glue Down, Nail Down, or Float.

NB: This is a brushed & oiled surface, so oak being oak, there will be a variance in the depth of texture, depending on the grain of each board. Some boards may be quite smooth with not much texture but others may be quite 'rough' where more of the softer fibres of the face have been brushed out, sometimes causing a slightly 'spiky' feel. This is not a fault with the board and can either be fixed by lightly sanding the area concerned and re-coating with waxoil, or simply avoided through selection of the boards during installation.
We will not accept returns for this reason because it must be accepted and understood on order that oak is a natural product and we have no control over how the tree grows.
It's also worth noting that we advise applying another 1-2 coats of waxoil immediately after installation in areas where there is risk of spillages or moisture 'splashes' or 'drips'. Although there is no such thing as a 'waterproof' oak floor, this will help protect your new floor and 'seal' the joints between the boards, whilst improving resistance to wear and tear.
IMPORTANT:
If for some reason you’re just interested in prices and not the overall quality, please note that our Engineered Oak boards are machined to very low tolerances, thus reducing selection and fitting time, and remedial work required after installation. This all adds up to a saving in cost and time for you. Before you order on price alone somewhere else, always check the machining tolerances for the product you want because the extra work required after installation can make that product very expensive. We’ve seen 130mm wide boards varying by 4mm in width over a 1200mm length!
Overall Grade Mix – 25% mix of each A, B, C and D grades to give an authentic appearance of natural oak with natural features and character.
A Grade – Allows live knots no more than 10mm, repaired dead knots no more than 5mm. Sapwood no more than 5% of face area. Allows natural grain and colour difference.
B Grade - Allows live knots no more than 25mm, repaired dead knots no more than 10mm. Sapwood no more than 15% of face area. Allows natural grain and colour difference.
C Grade - Allows repaired dead knots no more than 25mm. Sapwood no more than 30% of face area. Allows natural grain and colour difference.
D Grade - Allows larger repaired dead knots. Sapwood no more than 40% of face area. Allows natural grain and colour difference. Open defects are filled and sanded.

Ours, with multiple layers of ply, each running in the opposite direction to the next and heat bonded together with boil-proof glue, thus creating a cross-grain structure where, when the wood fibres within want to either ‘take on’ or ‘give off’ moisture and expand or contract, each layer is restrained by the other so providing incredibly strong dimensional stability?

Or the other with 1 single core of softwood, which has all its grain running in one direction?
We think the answer is obvious, and that’s why all our Engineered Oak is plywood backed.
It provides excellent stability and strength, and our 21mm board is actually structurally graded, so can be fixed directly to floor joists at 400 c/s with no need for a supporting subfloor.
Always remember, when installing an Oak Floor, you want to install it once, not twice!

The multiply back construction of our Engineered Oak flooring provides much greater stability than Solid Oak when subjected to varying levels of heat, humidity, and moisture. This also enable the boards to be manufactured a lot wider than solid without risk of cupping, which is associated with the wide solid oak boards available.
This stability allows the floor to be installed as a floating floor where conditions permit, directly onto concrete or timber subfloors, and is ideal for floating floor installation over an underlay that can provide your floor with extra protection from possible moisture attack from beneath. Engineered Oak can also be fitted above underfloor heating when the correct installation guidelines are followed and the necessary levels of heat, humidity and moisture are maintained by the owner after installation.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Sometimes the plywood backed engineered boards will seem as if they are ‘bowed’ from end to end when they are first removed from the packaging. This is very common with a plywood backed product because of the difference in molecular structure of the solid oak face and the plywood backing.
It is not a fault with the board and should be expected. It does not cause any problems during installation because of the required staggered joint fixing for an oak floor. Obviously as each board is ‘surrounded’ when fixed, by at least another 4 boards, it is straightened and aligned perfectly every time. In fact, some fitters claim this actually strengthens the floor further.
