Finishes Available
There are many different appearances available through the use
of different colours but the main 3 standard finishes are;
-
Lacquered
-
Brushed & Natural Oiled
-
Double Brushed & Dark Oiled
-
Unfinished
1. Lacquered
Finish.
This finish means
that the surface or face of the Oak board has been pre-treated
with a UV lacquer, which makes the board relatively hard and
smooth.
It can have varying layers
of lacquer applied, making it a very hard wearing and durable
surface. For example, ours has 7 layers of lacquer over a high
quality primer.
The lacquer sits on the surface of the Oak and is normally very
smooth with shiny gloss appearance.
2. Brushed &
Natural Oiled Finish
With this finish the
surface of the oak is brushed to remove the softer fibres from
the grain, so leaving a slightly textured finish. Then, the
application of natural oil protects the surface without
darkening the shade, thus keeping the natural colour of oak.
Brushed oak always brings out the natural beauty of the grain
and beautiful character features that oak has.
The
oil soaks into the wood and so the floor will require a slight
re-oil every so often depending on wear and volume of ‘traffic’.
One advantage of a Brushed & Oiled finish is that if the surface
becomes scratched or bruised, not only do the scratches not show
up as much but any badly damaged or worn area can be easily
‘touched up’ by simply lightly sanding the area and applying
another coat of oil.
3. Double Brushed & Dark Oiled
Double
brushing is something that not many companies offer because it’s
a little more expensive and time consuming to produce than
standard brushed and oiled but the results are stunning,
especially when oiled with a slightly darker than natural oil.
This really enhances the features of
natural oak and you’ll struggle to find a more authentic
appearance than this.
Very popular with barn conversions and
developments that want that classic ‘used’ oak look without
going for the very expensive hand-scraped finish. Also popular
in bars and restaurants because it is very easy to keep clean
and maintain, whilst also not showing marks and scratches as
much as some other finishes would in high traffic areas.
4. Unfinished
The
unfinished Oak board has become more and more popular in recent
years because of the increase in types of finish available.
Obviously companies cannot stock every finishing colour
available and still remain in business, but many different ones
are available off the shelf.
The unfinished board can be installed and
then finished with whatever colour the end user wants, whether
it be simply something to match the colour of their windows in a
brown, or something a little different like a bright blue or
red.
Likewise, it can be oiled or lacquered to
create your chosen and preferred appearance.
Engineered Flooring Over Under
Floor Heating
The picture below shows an example of how
our engineered board can be used with Underfloor Heating. It
shows an electrical ‘intelligent’ system but our flooring is
suitable for use with most UFH systems.
Having said that, it’s always wise to check
with your UFH supplier before any installation begins.
In this situation, Sonic Gold Excel
underlay has been installed between the UFH and the flooring to
not only protect both but also to give a comfortable surface to
walk on.

The Sonic Gold Excel is ideal for use with
UFH systems when installing your new floor using the floating
method because it has such low thermal resistance and yet also
has a double damp proof membrane.
One thing to consider when installing your
floor with the floating method is the amount of ‘give’ that some
floors allow when fitted like this. If you want your floor to
feel really solid and ‘oak-like’, it may well be worth investing
that little bit extra by fitting the heavier and more solid 21mm
board as opposed to the 15mm board.
Many Other Products Available...
Although we stock an extensive range of
products, we understand that we can never keep everything that’s
available with regards finishes.
If you don’t see what you want within our
stock range, still ask us because we may be able to put you in
touch with a UK supplier who we know and that suppies high
quality like ourselves.
If you can wait for 12 weeks and the
quantity you require is over 100 M2, we can probably source the
product ourselves.
